Week six

stress

In Module Five, your accent skills will go to the next level. You'll use the intonation patterns of American English, and your speech will be easy to understand and will not sound foreign. You'll know exactly how to use intonation to speak more naturally and sound like a native speaker of English.

Homework:

1) Listen to native speakers. Mimic their rhythm.

2) Listen to songs and replicate the melody of the lyrics. You don’t have to know how to sing, it’s more about the language than your singing skills :) You can hum or whistle if that helps. You can also engage your body and move.

3) Write sentences or google them and find content words and function words. Then play with stressing different syllables while maintaining the rhythm of the sentence.

4) Practice word stress by exaggerating the stressed syllable.

5) Practice daily and remember that you are unlearning your native language patterns that you might have been applying while speaking English. It’s normal for these things to take time. But practice, practice, practice.

6) Reward yourself! You’re doing so well.
